Visualizing & Explaining Taxes
A Video Prototype

This eight week project focused on information that is often represented poorly. I chose taxes as my topic because the subject is often misunderstood by the public and existing representations of tax information are frequently confusing and fail to engage the viewer.

I used sliders to visualize the allocation of tax revenue to different agencies and the effect of changing this distribution.

In order for users to connect their lives with the tax information, I developed the concept for an interactive application that would allow the user to see how his or her taxes might be spent. The application would use a loose estimation of the user's taxes as a tangible base for explaining increasingly complex information, while still providing a manageable context.

I produced the video below to demonstrate how an interactive application could help users gain a better understanding of how the tax system works.
